How to use this tool

Tick read, write and execute for owner, group and others, or type an octal value such as 755. The tool shows the numeric value, the symbolic form (rwxr-xr-x) and the ready-to-run chmod command.

Worked example

755 = rwxr-xr-x: owner can read/write/execute, everyone else can read and execute. 640 = rw-r-----.

Frequently asked questions

It gives every user read, write and execute. Avoid it; it is almost never the right fix and is a security risk.

What is the best permission for a web directory?

Commonly 755 for directories and 644 for files, owned by the deploy user.

What are setuid/setgid/sticky?

Special leading digits: 4 setuid, 2 setgid, 1 sticky (for example 1777 on /tmp).
